This artwork is called 'Distort' because the bodies are placed in unconventional positions the human body can't naturally bend to. It reflects the human instinct to naturally try to fit in, and the crippling ways we force ourselves to change in order to be 'accepted' in society.

This experimental mixed-media photographic work explores themes of memory, identity, and the degradation of human connection in the digital age. By obscuring the faces of the central figures with stark white bars and gestural lines, the piece detaches individual identity from the narrative, inviting the viewer to step into an eerie, dreamlike space between reality and abstraction. The artistic process bridges analog traditions and modern digital techniques. Beginning with a base composition created through direct physical contact processes—incorporating rayogram light exposures and cyanotype tonality—the image grounds itself in tactile, camera-less photography. These analog elements were then digitized using a flatbed scanner to capture raw textures, light leaks, and physical artifacts. Finally, Photoshop was utilized to overlay multiple visual strata, controlling transparency and contrast to build a dense, multi-dimensional visual field. The interplay of deep blacks, high-contrast whites, and expressive white linework creates a fractured landscape where physical figures merge into environmental architecture. Through this hybrid medium approach, the artwork examines how technology mediates, distorts, and reshapes personal history, leaving behind ghostlike traces of time and presence.

Entry #197

For my 2026 year 12 major artwork, I wanted to express my connection to home. As a boarder living away from home to study, the memories of the years on my farm comfort me. I’ve grown up in a country town called Paskeville, on the Yorke Peninsula, South Australia on my family's cattle and cropping farm with my mum, dad, sister and brother. Our farm sees all the different seasons of seeding, spraying and harvesting alongside hard times of drought and floods. This has taught me so much about resilience, hard work and determination. I was inspired by artist Imants Tillers and I composed this artwork from 6 different images of my home at different times through the years. My sister is in the painting with me when we were younger, jumping in puddles. Through this artwork, I wanted to show that home is more than just a physical place. It is made up of memories, family, experiences and a sense of belonging. I hope my artwork communicates the comfort I find in these memories while I am away from home. Reflecting on the meaning of my home, I have named my painting 'Fragments of Home'
